What: In response to the call from
President Bush and the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to
implement a plan that ends homelessness, the Greenville Chapter of
the Upstate Homeless Coalition of South Carolina is presenting a 10
year plan to end homelessness in Greenville county. The plan will
address the issues surrounding the causes of homelessness and the
actions that need to be taken to reduce the numbers of chronically
homeless persons and to shorten the length of homelessness for the
temporary homeless (usually people who lost their job or suffered
an illness that caused then to lose their home).
When: Tuesday, March 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Where: The Greenville Chamber of
Commerce, 24 Cleveland Street, Greenville
Who: The Greenville Chapter of the
Upstate Homeless Coalition of South Carolina along with local
dignitaries including Greenville Mayor Knox White, Ms. Minor Shaw,
and Chairperson of United Way's Strengthing Families and
Neighborhoods Impact Council are among many who support this cause.
Why: This Call To Action will
address a serious issue that is a growing concern in Greenville
County. Existing homeless services providers are being pushed to
their limits. In addition, police, hospital, mental health,
detention center, food stamps, and other services are being
strained. With the input and support of the city, local
businesses, citizens, and the media the programs that need to be
implemented to end homelessness can come to the forefront and
results will be seen. Affordable housing is the key along with
support services, programs, prevention of homelessness, and
awareness that the problem exists.
